Year 12 Depth Study Chemistry Days
2022 DATES: TBC, but late term 2
600students over 5 days from all over Sydney spend half a day at Western Sydney University, Parramatta undetaking practicals as part of their HSC Chemistry Course which are difficult to be completed in the school laboratory. They are also provided with pre-work and post-work which is to be completed as part of their Depth Studies.
The day comprises of two practicals and one demonstration:
1) Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy - students learn the processes behind the use of the instrumentation and how it is used to measure the sodium content of a sports drink. They use the chemical processes including dilution. They use the AAS instrument to run their samples and then determine the amount of sodium in the sports drink.
2) Amount of Sulfate in Fertiliser - students undertake this experiment using university grade equipment and laboratory space. The students do this experiment in 45 minutes using vacuum pumps and high grade chemicals.
3) Ultraviolet Visible Spectroscopy - demonstration only. Students will observe how the machine works and be presented with data to analyse
